The rooms at The Old House At Home, Burton near Bath

At £85 for single occupancy my room at The Old House At Home (a gastro pub with separate rooms) was a little bit pricey, but after a few mouthfuls of the huge plate of pasta and feta tempura at The Crown, their sister pub down the road, I was definitely feeling sleepy, and thought staying the night might be the safest option.

Although it’s a straight drive down a windy little track and just a left when you get to the slightly bigger tiny country road I was in danger of getting lost even then - so yes, I think it was the right decision to stay.

The very helpful lady in the pub showed me all the available rooms - No. 1 - Lafite (each room is named after a wine) - French chateau chic wasn’t for me, but   No.2 - Richebourg, was a little more cosy (definitely suiting my mood) and I was sold!

I picked up a stack of magazines from the pub and was ready to chill out - but had to go back to the pub to ask them to show me how to work the rather sophisticated coffee machine and to grab some of their herbal teas.  (The coffee is very good, as is the hot chocolate - I tried a little of everything!)

The rain shower was wonderful, the bed was great, I had a widescreen TV, comfy slippers (which again you can keep), luscious shower gel and moisturiser in the bathroom, (and, as well as a hair dryer, there were also hair straighteners in the drawer!), hot chocolate and plenty of magazines - heaven.

There were a few downsides; yet again there was no conditioner in the bathroom - but I always have mine handy now; the door has a frosted panel in it which looks straight on the bedroom, so you might not be comfortable if you are a bit self conscious; and unfortunately the pub’s car park is just below the rooms.

It actually made me laugh, as one of the reasons I wasn’t quite ready to go home is that I have some very noisy neighbours who like to stand and shout their goodbyes outside my bedroom window.  So, just as I turned out the light, a few people decided to leave the pub and stand just under my room saying their goodbyes.  Oh well - at least it didn’t last long - and the night was very quiet, until the morning village traffic started along the little road, including a horse clip clopping along the road - so cute.

Breakfast was served in the pub and was wonderful; after 3 solid days of fry ups I really enjoyed my huge bowl of fruit, followed by smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.  I was a bit sorry I hadn’t come down the night before to try a bit of pudding - but I was too full from my pasta and all the little Marshfield Bakery treats in my room (okay and I did have a stash from my morning visit to the shop!)

Once again, this inn (rated 5 stars by the AA) was just the perfect place for my mood.  It was just chic enough, with a homey touch and great attention to detail - especially the food and drink, both in the pub and in the room itself.  If you plan on seeing any of the surrounding area around Bath it’s lovely to wake up and head straight off to the little villages - and it turns out the pub is an old friend’s local - it is a small world!
