Okay well unfortunately this time around we didn’t get to any bars as such (although the bar at Rosa Mexicano did look rather elegant), but luckily enough, bars were definitely on the agenda the last time I was in New York, and my favourite by far was the Flatiron Lounge, conveniently situated walking distance from our hotel - The Marcel at Gramercy.

After a woozy evening at the Marriott’s View Lounge, the marathon that was the play offs at the ESPN sports bar and a vague wander around Bleeker St looking for nightlife on a Saturday, it was with fairly low expectations that we ended up in here on a Sunday night.  Although the place was quiet, it was quiet in a moody, we just survived Saturday way, with the few patrons all sitting at the bar, chatting with the bar staff, who were dressed appropriately in classic vintage outfits; the bar room conversation; what cocktail would Flash Gordon drink?  And that’s what this place is, the kind of place that Flash Gordon would have chilled out in the 50s, a man’s bar with a speakeasy feel and the vibe that even though it’s Sunday night and it’s quiet, this is the place to be.

Sorry there’s no photo but this was before I started the website, so you’ll just have to check out their website to really see what all the fuss is about!

Cocktails around $14 (approx. £9) beers and soft drinks considerably less (our bartender didn’t bother to charge us for my soft drinks): as at June 2008
