They did a great job considering all the issues; two days after a hurricane hit New York with flights backed up on the way out, and our return flight was only a couple of days before the tenth anniversary of 9/11.  Both ways we were hit by a fair amount of turbulence.  On the return flight the cabin crew actually had to return to their seats and could only start to distribute food, and, more urgently, drinks, about 5 hours into the 8 hour flight!  In fact the seatbelt sign was on for 90% of the flight.

What I particularly liked about this airline was that all the team seemed to have a great sense of humour, whether it was joking about our luggage or daring Rosa to chug her bottle of Sprite before going through security.  They certainly needed it.

The food was pretty good when it arrived, but on the way over they dished up a second “meal” of pizza sandwiches followed by ice cream.  I was starving so wolfed it down along with half of my neighbour’s ice cream.  Unfortunately 20 minutes later we started our descent.  There was no hanging around, what with all the other planes waiting to land, so it was a bumpy ride down and I wasn’t the only one on the plane ready to barf.  In retrospect pizza is much better when you’re on the ground!

In-flight movies were also pretty good, and they provide you with a blanket, pillow and headphones as standard.  On the return I picked up a pair of noise cancelling headphones in the airport - oh my - it made such a difference I would highly recommend these for any long haul flights (or just trying to have a nap at home when you have noisy neighbours!) and of course those soft travel pillows are also very useful, for your head or your back.  (I forgot one of my best travel accessories - the hot water bottle - I find if I get a stewardess to fill this up and put it in the small of my back I’m usually out like a light!)

Both airports have most of the amenities you can expect from a major airport - but JFK does have nail bars which gives it a few extra points in my opinion!
