Blue Sky Meditation

This is my favourite meditation, and is particularly useful when I am worried or overrun with lots of different thoughts or questions.

Close your eyes, and breathe in gently through your nose, filling up your lungs, and then exhale through your mouth, expelling all the breath in your body.  Take a few deep breaths and then continue, more gently, in through the nose and out through the mouth.

Focus on your breath, letting go of other thoughts.

Imagine a beautiful blue sky.

When a thought appears, imagine it as a white cloud, and with your out breath gently blow the cloud away, leaving a beautiful blue sky.

Continue to focus on the blue sky, gently blowing away any new thoughts or clouds that appear.

If you are finding it difficult, imagine a warm, gentle sun in the blue sky, feel its radiance and warmth.  Let go, feeling the sun warm you, relaxing you.

Relax and let go, enjoying the calm and peace.

When you feel strong and ready, invite one of the clouds into the blue sky.  Look at this one thought all alone and allow yourself to deal with it in isolation.

When you are ready, and if you want to, you can continue, dealing with each of your thoughts or questions one by one.  At any time you can choose to gently blow away any thoughts you do not want to focus on, and enjoy the calm, blue sky once again, or choose to look at a different thought.

There is no time limit to this meditation.  You do not have to focus on any particular thought if you don’t want to.  Personally I find that all of the many thoughts that crowd my brain, when invited in one by one are much easier to deal with, and this is why I like this meditation as it allows me to see things more clearly and with a much better perspective.
